WHERE: The Witham
WHEN: 2nd Monday of each month
See Calendar for dates of meetings.

We are a group of people with a shared interest in Science and Technology.  Our talks and discussions cover a very wide range of topics  and are aimed at all levels.  You don’t need a scientific background to enjoy them, just an interest in the scientific and technological world.

We meet on the 2nd Monday in the month, from 10.00am -12.00 noon, in the upper room of The Witham, which is in the centre of Barnard Castle.  N.B.The Witham is technically closed on Mondays but they will be opening up for us.  However please use the entrance from the car park by Morrison’s, not the front door on the Market Place as it will be locked.

The cost is  £2.00 – £2.50/session (includes refreshments)

Car parking:-  there is ample space in the pay car park by Morrison’s, or limited time free parking on the cobbles in front of The Witham.

What sort of things do we do?

Many of the talks and discussions are led by members of the group and cover a wide range of topics in science and engineering.  In the past they have  included aspects of Alchemy, Wind Energy, and Drugs in Sport to name but a few.  During the year we try to fit in one or two outings to companies and places of interest.  In recent years members have visited Hartlepool Nuclear Power Station and NETPark at Sedgefield and two Recycling Plants.

Please check the Calendar for details.

The Mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Pipe Organ

In 2017 we visited the New Victoria Centre in Howden-le-Wear to see and hear the Mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Pipe Organ that is housed there. The visit was hosted by John Heslop, the Chairman of the North East Theatre Organ Association, who gave an interesting history of theatre pipe organs and this one in particular. Following a performance to demonstrate the capabilities of the organ John Heslop took us backstage to see the actual working parts.
