Travel Moves On
We should offer Dorothy Jameson our special thanks for all the work she has done providing travel and outings for Teesdale U3A. Special thanks go to Jane Mathieson for taking over the reins. Below, Dorothy gives us an idea of all the opportunities she has provided over the last eleven years.
Our first holiday with U3A was in 2008 when we went in a coach trip to the Cotswolds. The firm we went with was Preferred Travel and our coach driver was called ‘Magic’. He was an excellent driver, and looked after us for several years. Eventually he lost his magic and we decided that we preferred Carol at Kyle Travel.
We have certainly travelled. We used to do two holidays a year. A spring holiday in the UK and an autumn holiday abroad. Our Continental holidays took us to Majorca, Italy, Portugal, Germany, Holland, Austria and Croatia.
We have visited some wonderful gardens, Highgrove, Hidcote, Manor, Bodnant, Eden Project, David Austin Roses, and Kew. We have cruised rivers, albeit not very far, including the Rhine, the Severn, Norfolk Broads, the Thames and we have been ‘ferried across the Mersey’.
Our train journeys have included the Welsh Highland Railway, the Severn Railway and the Isle of Man.
We haven’t neglected Royalty, but they seemed to have shunned us on our visits to Balmoral, Windsor Castle, Holyrood Palace and Dumfries House.
We had a memorable trip to Oberammergau and an intriguing trip to Bletchley Park.
All together we have had about 30 holidays.
You don’t get many people volunteering in U3A without a great deal of pressure so when Jane Mathieson contacted me offering to take over the travel Group I jumped at the chance. After all, after 11 years running the group I feel I am in need of a holiday!
