By the time you read this I will have returned from a holiday with a friend touring on our motorcycles across Germany, Austria, Hungary and Romania, an ambition I have had since I retired 12 years ago.
A couple of weeks ago I was waiting to pay for a snack in a cafe in Middleton behind a group of cyclists, some of them teenagers. Amongst the teenagers there were discussions about how much cake and biscuits cost and what they could afford (not much generally).
This made me think of where we had come from, the opportunities we have had and where we are now.
We did not all come from ‘privileged’ backgrounds. Our educations were mixed and not all went to university. Sometimes we were not totally in control of what was happening to us. We took the opportunities presented to us (and sometimes we didn’t).
But at the end of all this, we are, hopefully, where we want to be with somewhere to live, someone to love and something to look forward to.
