Art Appreciation Update
It is worth watching “Auction” which is on most afternoons at 3.30 pm on Sky Arts. In 30 minutes it covers a wide range of items from masterpiece paintings to furniture and classic cars at auctions all over the world going back a few years.
In a recent episode, one of the finest paintings by JMW Turner, Rome, From Mount Aventin, which is still in private hands, is up for auction at Sotheby’s. It went to over £30m, with commission, (having had an estimate of £15-20m) and in the same episode model steam rail engines were sold at auction. Not, of course, at the same auction! In another episode the original images of The Beatles crossing Abbey Road go up for auction at Dreweatts & Bloomsbury and meanwhile Old Master sculptures go under the hammer at Sotheby’s.
The programmes discuss important relevant information about the items and why they are expensive or not, before they get into the auction.
